Donald Antor, our youth director, will be conducting a social media awareness class for parents at the Palatine Public Library on Tuesday, July 26 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. It’s the third class in a series designed to bring parents up-to-speed on what kids are doing on social media and what parents can do to educate and protect their children. Previous topics included a general overview, Snapchat and Twitter.
“We have a great couple of sessions so far. The class structure is very flexible to allow for people in the class to ask questions that have come up in their experience in raising children. Also, it has been very interactive. It’s been nice that I am able to use my own social media sites to help explain what is being discussed. One of the big takeaways I have learned from this class is that social media is rapidly changing. There is always some new, exciting app that becomes extremely popular with our youth. It can be truly hard to keep up with the fast-paced changes in social media,” says Antor. Antor has worked with various youth groups over the years. He spent a year working with youth in Oklahoma. He was then a youth pastor in southern Illinois for four years, before moving to the area. He has worked with youth in various ways such as a teacher, mentor, on mission trips, and other youth-related activities.
“I feel this class has helped parents in understanding why youth see the value in various social media along with giving them some good basic principles to help them in navigating through raising a child in this digital age. Please come and join us on July 26 as we discuss two very big things with our youth today, cell phones and Snapchat. Feel free to join us even if you haven’t been to a class and come with questions,” Antor adds.
